The Easiest Guide: Checking the Sod Quality

Laying Sod Series: Checking the Sod Quality

Saving a lot of money by laying your own sod requires knowing how to inspect the quality of the sod before placing it. The sod quality you choose will have a significant impact on how well your project turns out, but sadly, most sod is rather unhealthy and not conducive to a lush, green lawn. Here are some telltale signals that indicate whether you are viewing quality sod or not.

I. Signs that you have bad sod

1. Bad Sod Quality: Growth of Fungi

If you see fungus growing on your lawn, it is one of the first indications that your sod is of low quality. This may manifest as a moss-like layer that is often orange in colour or even as tiny mushrooms that start to grow.
The fungus often develops when the sod has been too moistened or when it was of low quality to begin with. You may also attempt remedies like fungicide, although they often make the situation worse. Additionally, you must spray a lot of dangerous chemicals into the air. Choosing fresh sod is usually the preferable option when there is fungal development.

2. Bad Sod Quality: Nothing but soil is in your sod

If your sod is formed wholly or virtually entirely of dirt, that is another warning indicator. By taking a handful of sod and sifting it through your fingers, you can quickly verify this.
The consistency of high-quality sod will be less smooth and bulkier since it will include minerals, roots, and other elements. Because of its uniformity, the sod has all it needs to grow healthy grass. However, sod that is primarily dirt has to be changed since it won’t benefit you.

3. Bad Sod Quality: Dying and Dead Grass

Most likely, when you envision the “perfect lawn,” you see one that is thick, green, and healthy. Unfortunately, diseased sod cannot produce that kind of grass.
Your sod is undoubtedly to fault if, despite your best efforts, your grass continues to be lifeless, brown, and ugly. There are several “store treatments” available that claim to revive dead grass, but if your problem is terrible sod, nothing will help.
Spend no money on ineffective “treatments.” You would be far better off choosing fresh and improved sod and dealing with the root issue.

4. Bad Sod Quality: Grass Growth

Another sign of damaged sod is the presence of weeds in your lawn, particularly if you are having trouble getting rid of them.
It is usual for weeds to develop when the sod is overloaded with moisture, which may be quite challenging to fix without replacing the sod. Additionally, many commercial weed killers often injure your good grass in addition to the weeds and may lead to other issues, making them ineffective and not worth the effort.
Since excellent sod includes elements that may prevent weeds from ever growing in the first place, replacing your existing sod is a far better alternative to end your weed issues once and for all.

II. What to consider when checking the quality of sod

1. Consistency

You must consider how much of the sod is soil when discussing the soil’s consistency. There should be no more than an inch of dirt covering the sod you are ordering.  More dirt puts too much of a barrier between the roots of the grass and the soil in your yard.  If you have less soil, the grass won’t be able to maintain itself until it has completely grown in and its roots have had time to penetrate the earth under the sod.
Your sod’s life depends on the quality of the soil it is planted in.  The consistency is off if the dirt seems to be crumbling.  Consider this: if the soil is eroding, it will fail to hold you together when you need it most. The soil is a crucial component of the sod installation procedure since it is the sole source of nutrients for the sod and the only thing that keeps the grass alive.  The soil must support the sod until it can reach the new soil and get acclimated to it.
On the other hand, if the dirt is so tightly compacted that there is no possibility of it crumbling, you are confronted with a different issue.  For the grass to establish itself in the foundation soil of the yard, those tiny, mesh-like roots must get through.  Your grass won’t be able to fight its way past that wall of earth if the soil is too densely packed and will eventually run out of nutrients and die.

2. Fertilization

Verify that the sod you are considering has received the appropriate fertilisation.  Your sod will be more resistant to disease and drought if you fertilise it properly.  Additionally, fertiliser affects the colour of your grass and aids in its recovery from stress, such as that caused by being uprooted and moved.  You will be one step closer to having a happy, healthy, green lawn with properly fertilised sod.
It’s also crucial to consider how long it has been since the sod was fertilised before purchasing sod.  Nearly as much as you don’t want to underfertilize your lawn, you also don’t want to overfertilize it. Both extremes have the potential to cause issues like crabgrass, wilting, or the illness known as Brown Patch.

3. Maturity

A need for high-quality sod should be mature grass. You absolutely do not want sod that has grass that is still establishing itself in the earth.  So what does being mature entail in terms of sod.  What qualifies something as mature?  It will be simpler to determine its maturity if certain characteristics, such as how thick it is or the regularity of the colour, are present.
The roots are one highly significant indicator of maturity.  All the roots should resemble a complex web of tangled, linked roots, much like a spider web.  They will be able to withstand the handling involved in being cut, transported, inspected, sold, transported once more, and installed when they are all knit together in that way.  In order to know that once it is set, the dense web of roots will begin establishing itself in the soil, it should also be somewhat visible.
There shouldn’t be any clumps of grass that are a different shade of green than the rest of the grass.  If the grass is not uniform, it may be young, unwell, or infected.  The same grass should be extremely thick, dense, and at least 2 inches long. When it is thick, you may be sure that when it is laid down, it won’t seem scant.

4. Time of Harvest

From the moment the sod is cut at the sod farm until the time it is replanted, there is a roughly 8-hour window to work within.  The sod begins to get strained from all the moisture loss if it is not replanted within that time frame.
– Discoloration, warmth, and dampness are three of the easiest signs to check for to determine whether the sod has been harvested for an excessive amount of time.
The simplest is discoloration since you can tell without even touching it.  It’s quite likely that the grass has been left out for too long if it’s not all the same shade of green.
– The presence of warmth should always be looked for since it might tell more than the naked sight. You should feel for the centre of the sod pallet there.  If the centre is warm, it has been exposed to the sun for far too long and has begun to decompose.  Additionally, it shows the first signs of thatch or dead grass. Dead or decaying grass has no place in your new garden, particularly considering that you paid for it.
– Actually, moisture is composed of two elements. Moisture will be present around the roots of good, new sod.  Without that moisture, the heat will cause it to begin to wither.  Moisture along the margins makes up the second component.  There isn’t enough moisture in the whole pallet to keep the sod alive long enough to get it to the planting spot if the margins of the sod are dry or cracked.  That sod is kept alive by moisture until it can get the additional nutrients it need from the soil. Your sod gets stressed and more susceptible to illness than it otherwise would be as a result of moisture loss.
